Goodbye, microplastics!
High on our list of environmental problems: the global flood of plastic. And a major part of global plastic pollution is microplastics. Although it has “micro” in the name and thus seems at first glance like a, well, small problem, it makes up a large proportion of the plastic that enters the environment. What can you do about it, and what does it have to do with your jeans? Quite a lot.
Microplastics are small plastic particles that pollute our environment. We can assume that up to ¾ of global plastic waste consists of microplastics. That is several million tonnes annually. And most of it ends up in the oceans. For fish and other marine animals, the small, colorful plastic pieces can quickly look like food, which is unhealthy for them and can have fatal consequences. Furthermore, it also means that microplastics end up in our food. Even if you don't eat fish, microplastics can enter your body, as plastic particles have also been found in, for example, sea salt and mineral water.
Microplastics have many different causes. Among the top 10 sources of microplastics in Germany is, among others, the washing of synthetic clothing. During washing, plastic fibers break off the clothing and enter the wastewater, as washing machines and treatment plants cannot filter them out of the water.
