An Embroidered History of War
My name is Camila Miranda. I design wearable art, handmade one-of-a-kind pieces, collages, and embroidered stories.
The story I want to tell you about is one of war, peace, and the land of magical realism. In this land, enchanted yellow butterflies flutter over rivers of red blood. It is the land of 1900 animal and plant species; the land where war has reigned for 50 years.
Nothing has changed today. In fact, it has gotten worse. After years of negotiations, betrayal, and the sabotage of the peace process, the only thing the people of this land demand is a life of dignity, with adequate education, opportunities, and a chance at justice. They dream of being able to demand this without dangerous consequences and censorship. But once again, they are brutally and mercilessly suppressed.
Between state repression and the dream of a healing land, which has receded into the distant reaches, stands an entire generation of upright, resilient, and vocal people with powerful arguments. They are the creative young people who refuse to give up. They are a true inspiration. They show what it means to be there for one another. Thank you
I dedicate my designs for Art of Broken Pieces to all those who are still standing tall to resist. And I dedicate it to those who have been silenced; the leaders of the movement, the Indigenous and Black communities. To the 6402 who disappeared and their families, who are still searching for them. I dedicate it to those who had to flee with nothing in their hands, and I dedicate it to those who still believe in peace, an end to the same old story, reparation, remembrance, and the truth.
“If we remain silent, they will kill us. If we speak, they will kill us. So we speak.” Cristina Taquinas Bautista, leader of the Indigenous movement, killed on . October 29, 2019, two weeks after she spoke these words.
